Church of St Benedetto

One of the seven gateways in the Medieval town walls, the others being: Porta Sant’ Angelo (or St. Ubaldo’s) Gate, the Porta Romana (or St. Augustine’s Gate), Porta Vittoria (or St. Peter’s Gate), Porta Ortacci (or St. Francis’s Gate) and Porta Castello (or St. Lucy’s Gate). This one is also known as Porta Metauro,(the longest river in the Marches), because the road from it leads towards the Marches. The one missing from the list is the Porta del Ponte Marmoreo which was demolished between 1862 and 1865 because it was jutting across the new ring road between Santa Croce and Pinolo. It is the only one to have preserved the ancient wooden door panels with its peephole and various iron fittings. It also has remnants of painted decorations in the intrados.
