Porta Vittoria
This was the main entrance to the town near to the great Benedictine monastery of San Pietro and the point from where the road led to Assisi. Its name derives from its vicinity to the little church dedicated to Santa Maria della Vittoria. It is also noteworthy architecturally as it has a double set of gates and the outer ones were originally flanked by two towers surmounted by statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The gate figured on the seal of the Commune of Gubbio at the end of the 13th century. This shows a “castrum” with two towers surmounted by the statues of Saints Peter and Paul and a central turret (the second gateway) behind which rises Mount Ingino with its five humps. It bears the circular inscription: EUGUBIO SIGNUM - FORTIS MONS EST MIHI DIGNUM.
