The “Sperelliana” Municipal Library
Founded on 10th June 1666 when the then Bishop of Gubbio, Monsignor Alessandro Sperelli, made a gift of his personal library to the town to encourage young people to study. Subsequently, it was enriched by the acquisition of further collections. It possesses many works of great value including 90 incunabula. More than 55,000 volumes are now available for consultation. It was one of the earliest public libraries founded in Italy. Originally housed in Palazzo Pretorio, in 1974 it was transferred to the former monastery of The Holy Ghost and now occupies the prestigious premises of the former monastery of St. Peter. Thanks to its vast collection, the charm of its magnificent location and the high standard of its facilities it is one of the best functioning libraries in Umbria.
