Castle of Biscina
The Castle was a fief of the Counts of Coccorano. Between 1256-1259 Gubbio and Perugia were engaged in a bitter conflict within the wider struggle between the Guelphs and Gibellines. In 1258, Ugolino di Alberto, Count of Coccorano, made an act of submission placing all his castles, including Biscina, under the domination of Perugia. In 1480, Grifone dei Baglioni from Perugia attempted to assassinate the Lord of Biscina, Berardino, but was killed by the latter’s bodyguard, Galasso, before he could accomplish the deed. The Baglionis threatened to destroy the Castle but Federico da Montefeltro, the celebrated Lord of Urbino and patron of Renaissance art, placed the fortress and Berardino under his protection.
