Castle of Vallingegno
This magnificent castle overlooks the valley of the River Chiascio occupying a slightly lower position than the Abbey of San Verecondo. To date, the oldest documentary evidence of the castle’s existence is from 1308, but it must predate that. It is encircled by walls and a series of demilunes. In 1355 the castle rebelled against Gubbio but was retaken by the Eugubine forces under the command of the condottiere “ El bastardo da la Pergola”. It was reconstructed in 1370 and assigned to a warden. In the 15th century it was owned by the noble Balducci family from Gubbio and later, in the 17th century, by the Filippettis.
