The City Walls and Gate of St Ubaldo
Audioguide (2) Throughout its more than a thousand-year history, Gubbio has always had a circle of defensive walls to protect it, even in Umbrian times. Construction of the city walls was begun in The Early Middle Ages with the entrenchment of the town halfway up the mountainside and subsequently enlarged to incorporate newly settled areas and ensure adequate defense. The three-kilometer circle of walls around the town, still well preserved, date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The entire circle with its six gateways is still clearly visible. The best-preserved section is in the upper part of the town where one can see the towers, the keep and the loopholes up as far as St. Angelo’s Gate better known as St.Ubaldo’s Gate because the road passing through it leads up to the Sanctuary where the Saint’s uncorrupted body lies.
