The Monastery of St. Ambrose
Historical evidence of the existence of the Hermitage dates from 1331, the year it was built or restored and in which Pietro Gabrielli, the Bishop of Gubbio, consecrated it as a Priory after gathering within its walls all the hermits living in and around Gubbio. Subsequently, in 1342, the same Bishop conferred on the hermits the Rule of St. Augustine and raised the Priory to the dignity of Monastery. It makes a striking contribution to the surrounding landscape and inside the church the uncorrupted body of Blessed Arcangelo Canetoli, native of Bologna, is preserved. Since 1591, the church has also preserved the remains of Bishop Agostino Steuco, a renowned jure consulto, philosopher, historian, theologian, apostolic librarian and Secretary to the Council of Trent.
